The Maltese archipelago which is situated in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea lies 93 km south of Sicily, 288 km north of North Africa, 1,826 km east of Gibraltar, and 1,510 km west of Lebanon. At the extreme points, the Maltese islands cover an area of 316 sq. km, and fall within the following longitudes and latitudes: North is 36° 57` N. Latitude; East is 14° 35` E. Longitude; South is 35° 48` N. Latitude; West is 14° 11` E. Longitude.
The archipelago is made up of:
MALTA, which is also the main land, has an area of 246 sq. km, measures 27.3 km in length and 14.5 km at its widest, has a shore line of c. 136.8 km, and a population of around 320,000.
GOZO - in Maltese known also as Ghawdex, - with an area of 67sq. km, measures 14.5 km in length, 7.2 km in width, with a shoreline of 45 km, a population of around 28,000 and placed north-west of Malta.
COMINO - locally called as Kemmuna - which has an area of about 6 sq. km, with only one family settled and living on it, lies in between Malta and Gozo.
COMINOTTO - in Maltese Kemmunett - is 450 m long and 225 m wide, which is not inhabited and is located on the west of Comino .
ST. PAUL'S ISLANDS -(these are, in fact, one island but from far away they give the impression to be two small islands, and thus are called so. This is so even in Maltese and is called Il-Gzejjer ta' San Pawl - with 1 km in length and 200 m in width, which is not inhabited also.
MANOEL ISLAND - (an island within Marsamxett Harbour - once referred to as Il-Gzira), is about 1.25 km in length and 0.45 km in width.
FILFLA - that measures about 400 m in length and 250 m in width, and is situated about 4.5 km out at sea to the south-east of Wied iz-Zurrieq, and finaly

ROCK - (locally know also as Il-Gebla tal-General) - which can be found in
the entrance of Dwejra Bay in San Lawrenz, Gozo.
